History of The Rio Grill
Rio Grill is located in the Crossroads in Carmel, California. The site at one
time was the home of Billy Quon's restaurant until November of 1983 when
after it's remodeling was re-opened as Rio Grill. At that time Rio Grill was
part of the Real Restaurants organization, and was affiliated with such
restaurants as Mustard's Grill and Tra Vigne in Napa Valley, and the Fog
City Diner in San Francisco. One of the current owners, Tony Tollner, had
joined Billy Quon's as a manager in September of 1983 to then become
general manager of Rio Grill in March 1984. He then became a Real
Restaurants partner in 1985. After the Real Restaurants partnership was
dissolved, Rio Grill was left to Bill Cox and Tony Tollner, its sole owners.

Rio Grill has been continuously acknowledged for its excellence in many
local and national publications. Voted 1998's Best in the Carmel Area by
Adventures in Dining Magazine, Rio Grill has also been voted numerous
times as the Best Restaurant in Monterey Country by the Coast Weekly's
readers poll. In addition to being recognized on the Monterey Peninsula as
one of the best restaurants for food and service, it has also been
recognized for its contribution to the community. Rio Grill sponsors and
coordinates the annual Rio Resolution Run held on January 1. The run,
which has been raising money to support the Suicide Prevention Service of
the Central Coast, has been in existence for 9 years and consists of a
6.8-mile scenic course as well as a 3-mile family fun run. Chris Bahrami is
the General Manager.
